Born
in Luzy,France in 1946,the Artist graduated in mechanical engineering
from the University of Lyon in 1967, worked in the Far-East as an oil
prospector, and travelled through the Americas in a VW camper as a photographer,
before moving to the US in 1974. His early shows were of photography,
and after years as an interior and furniture designer, he started painting
in 1981. Entirely self-taught, he went from hard edge op art, to architectural
abstractions in iridescent acrylics, to pastels of the figure, to charcoal
drawings on enormous linen panels of mythical scenes inspired by the
Carravagios seen on a trip to Italy in 1982.
The
artist started painting in oils on canvas at the end of 1985, then developped
his own technique of working in oils on large sheets of gessoed watercolor
paper, combining the brilliant transparency of watercolor and the rich
dark tones of oils. Several years were spentinvestigating the play of
light and shadow, reflections and refractions, transparency and opacity,
trying to approach the traditional still life subjects in a fresh and
personal way.
He
then became very interested in collections of small ordinary objects and the
effects of strong directional light on different kinds of shapes, surfaces
and textures . He started using watercolor for pieces with a lot of
texture in 1988. In 1991, the paintings started showing a mixture of
objets rather than objects of the same kind. The collections serie culminated
in a 4ftH x 15ft L oil oftravel related objects commissioned by the
Hyatt Corporation for their new hotel in Paris.
At
the end of 1993, the Artist started to use the finer and more unusual flea
market finds of the last 20 years, arranged on a shelf in ways reminiscent
of 17th century trompe l'oeil still-lives, and painted in oils on linen at
a larger than life scale. A renewed interest in drawing ,combined with oil
or watercolor, led to a series ofunusual nudes and doll portraits. A set
of huge "Unfinished
Historical Paintings" were inspired by an unfinished painting of the french
artist David. The articulated wooden figures collected in Guatemala appeared
in the most recent paintings, the last one being a 6ft H x 10ft W triptych : "the
Baptism of Clovis" , which took 6 months to complete.
The
Artist then brought in the third dimension in a group of shrines with painted
panels on their sides, inspired by the reliquaries of medieval Europe. The
next step was into pure sculpture with a project called "Dummies with
Souls",
a series of lifesize mannequins which can be seen in the sculpture section.
These were First shown at LeMieux galleries in New-orleans, the show opening
on "White Linen Night" 2000, a street fair and joint opening for all the
Galleries on Julia Street that draws a huge audience. They were also shown
at Monty Stabler Galleries in Birmingham, and through the summer of 2003
at the Wiregrass Museum in Dothan,Alabama. The
Artist has over the years won a number of awards in the Magic city art
connection and BluffPark shows in Birmingham,Alabama, the Gasparilla
Festival of Tampa ,Florida ($15000 Best of show in 1994), the Alabama
watercolor Society juried shows, and the Arches International Watercolor
Competition. An article about his work was published in the february
issue of The Artist Magazine. His work is represented in a number of
corporate collections, including Alabama Power Co, Southtrust Bank, Parisian
Inc., B.E & K, Piedmont Hospital, Bridgestone Tire Co, Coca Cola
Enterprises, Tampa Power, and the Hyatt Corporation.
